Geocache Description:

One of five 'new' Billy Twigger caches placed as part of the BTBC (Billy Twigger Bute Challenge). All five caches are CLOSE BY to sites where Billy Twigger caches have been previously (and are now archived).

This was the fifth in the Billy Twigger Bute Geology Geocache series and we find something that has travelled some distance! This makes for a perfect beach stroll (if the tide is out) and there are several possible starting points for this. The first is a dodgy parking spot at N55 50.377 W5 07.683. Watch you don’t get stuck in the soft verge. Better is the little picnic spot at N55 50.613 W5 07.644, but best of all is the parking at the Ettrick Bay Tearoom at N55 51.066 W5 08.429 (Just think of the home-made meringue and ice-cream as you walk back from the cache!!!) So – to our quest. The cache in a spot overlooking a glacial erratic. But not too close as the tides can get high here and the seaweed can be VERY slippery. Around 10,000 years ago, at the time of the last Ice Age, much of Bute was covered in glaciers. The largest glacier originated on Rannoch Moor, and on its way here, it picked up all sorts of gravel and rock. As the glaciers retreated, this detritus was dumped all over the place. At coastlines, the smaller rocks and gravels have been long since washed away by the waves, but the larger rocks remained. This example is not the biggest to be found on Bute, but its interesting because it was dumped at an awkward angle and at some point split in half. After you log your find, why not walk on a bit further round the bay to the erratic and then onto scramble up the basalt outcrop for some great views?
