Segundo os antigos cronistas, a designação de Funchal deve-se aos primeiros povoadores que, ao desembarcar neste lugar, depararam com a grande abundância de funcho, uma erva bravia com cheiro adocicado, que abundantemente vegetava no vale, na área do primitivo burgo.
O Funchal é uma cidade portuguesa na ilha da Madeira, capital da Região Autónoma da Madeira, sendo a décima mais populosa cidade de Portugal. A cidade coincide com o seu concelho, e tem 76,15 km² de área e 112 015 habitantes (2011), subdividindo-se em 10 freguesias. A área metropolitana do Funchal, que inclui os concelhos de Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Santa Cruz e Machico tem uma população superior a 225 mil habitantes.
Foi a João Gonçalves Zarco que coube a capitania da cidade em 1424, ano em que se iniciou o povoamento.

Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira. The city has a population of 100,526 and has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries.
The name Funchal, was applied by the first settlers that landed on its shores due to the abundance of wild fennel where, as tradition goes, the primitive burg was built. From the Portuguese word funcho (fennel)+ the suffix -al, to denote [a plantation of __]
