The Kirkjufell mountain is 463 metres high and is one of the better known mountains in Iceland because it is especially beautiful and impressive. Danish sailors who came to this mountain in earlier time called this mountain “The sugar top”.
The Kirkjufell mountain acquired its present form during the last part of the Ice Age and is one of the best examples of the glacial erosion in Iceland. The formation of Kirkjufell is special in many aspects. It is very steep in all directions because it was located as a a “nunatak”. A nunatak is a high rock between two glaciers. It is usually higher than the glaciers and its shape is influenced by the glaciers. In case of the Kirkjufell the pressure of these two glaciers shaped its nowadays form. You can compare the layers of Kirkjufell generally with the layers in the whole Snaefellsnes peninsula. They show lots of volcanic eruptions during the periods of the millions of years.
In the middle of the snaefellsness peninsula you can find the volcanic system Lýsuskarð. This volcanic system caused lots of eruptions on the peninsula, being active from 2 million years ago up to 10000 years ago. Resulting out of these eruptions you can read something in the layers of the mountain: The lowest part of the mountain is composed of sediments containing fossils. These sediments are believed to have been formed early in the Ice Age more than a one million years ago. They contain the remains of different organism that lives during either the cold or the warm periods of the Ice Age.
The upper part of the Kirkjufell mountain was formed during the last one million years during volcanic eruptions. The lava layers were formed during the warm periods of the Ice Age, while the hyaloclastite was formed beneath the glacier during the cold period of the Ice Age. Hyaloclastites are light pyroclastic stones which mostly consist out of volcanic glass.
Climbing up the Kirkjufell is very difficult, climbing down much more difficult – though you can find a cache on the top, please take this risk only if you are very experienced !!!

2. Look at the information board at the listed coordinates. How many different layers can you find in the Kirkjufell? Write down the name of the lowest one!
3. Measure the altitude above sea level where you stand on the listed coordinates and write the difference to the height of Kirkjufell!
4. I would be very happy if you take an optional photo of you, your GPS and the wonderful Kirkjufell!
5. Look at the information text at the listed coordinates and find the last word in the Icelandic information text. It has three letters - XXX. Write them to me!

Der Berg Kirkjufell befindet sich auf der Nordseite der Snaefellsness Halbinsel. Es ist eine eigene Halbinsel in den großen Fjord Breiðafjörður. Der Berg Kirkjufell ist 463 Meter hoch und ist einer der bekanntesten Berge in Island, weil er besonders schön und beeindruckend ist. Dänische Segler, die in früherer Zeit zu diesem Berg in früherer Zeit kamen, nannten diesen Berg "Die Zuckerspitze".
Der Kirkjufell hat seine jetzige Form im letzten Teil der Eiszeit bekommen und ist eines der besten Beispiele der glazialen Erosion in Island. Die Entstehung vom Kirkjufell ist in vielerlei Hinsicht besonders. Er ist sehr steil in alle Richtungen, weil er ein "nunatak" war. Ein nunatak ist ein hoher Felsen zwischen zwei Gletschern. Der Felsen ist in der Regel höher als die Gletscher und seine Form wird von den Gletschern geprägt. Im Falle der Kirkjufell hat der Druck dieser beiden Gletscher seinen heutigen Form geprägt.
Die Schichten der Kirkjufell können in der Regel im Vergleich mit den Schichten in der ganzen Halbinsel Snaefellsnes verglichen werden. Sie zeigen viele Vulkanausbrüche in den Zeiträumen von Millionen von Jahren. In der Mitte des Snaefellsness Halbinsel findet man das vulkanische System Lýsuskarð. Dieses vulkanische System verursachte viele Eruptionen auf der Halbinsel und war von 2.000.000 Jahren von bis zu 10000 Jahren aktiv. Aus diesen Eruptionen kann man etwas in den Schichten des Berges lesen: Der unterste Teil des Berges besteht aus Sedimenten, die Fossilien enthalten. Diese Sedimente sind vermutlich in den frühen Eiszeit entstanden und sind mehr als 1.000.000 Jahre alt. Sie enthalten die Überreste von anderen Organismen, die entweder während der kalten oder warmen Perioden der Eiszeit lebten.
Der obere Teil des Kirkjufells bildete sich während der letzten 1.000.000 Jahre während der Vulkanausbrüche. Die Lava-Schichten wurden während der Warmzeiten des Eiszeitalters gebildet, während die Hyaloclastiten unter dem Gletscher während der kalten Periode der Eiszeit entstanden. Hyaloclastiten sind leichte pyroklastische Steine, die meist aus vulkanischem Glas bestehen.
Klettern auf den Kirkjufell ist sehr schwierig, der Abstieg ist noch schwieriger – obwohl es einen Cache auf dem Gipfel gibt, riskiert den Aufstieg bitte nur, wenn ihr bergerfahren seid!!!!
Eure Aufgaben: 1. Was ist die Bedeutung des Wortes "Kirkjufell"? Erkläre den Namen!
2. Schau dir die Infotafel an der genannten Koordinaten an. Wie viele verschiedene Schichten kannst du beim Kirkjufell finden? Notiere den Namen der untersten Schicht!
3. Miss die Höhe über dem Meeresspiegel, wo du auf den angegebenen Koordinaten stehst und schreibe die Differenz zu der Höhe des Kirkjufell auf!
4. optional: Ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn du ein Foto von dir, deinem GPS und dem wunderschönen Kirkjufell machst!
5. Schau dir den Info-Text an den genannten Koordinaten an und finde das letzte Wort im isländischen Info-Text. Es hat drei Buchstaben - XXX. Schreib sie mir!
