Replacing a Severn ferry known as ‘Haw Passage’, the original HAW BRIDGE was constructed in 1824 at the behest of the people of Cheltenham, they hoped that trade with South Wales might by-pass Gloucester!
In January 1938, HAW BRIDGE made national headlines when it was at the centre of the 'Torso Murder', a human torso and limbs were dredged up from the riverbed, however, the head was never found and the crime never solved.
After this gruesome notoriety, the bridge collapsed in December 1958 after a barge collided with it in bad weather.
It’s replacement was finished in 1961 and that is the structure adjacent to this cache.
This is a ‘cache 'n' dash’, although I recommend you enjoy the footpaths and views on both sides of the river as well as the various historic inns within a few easy walking miles of this location.
Parking is at N51 56.924 W002 13.531
Happy Hunting!!
