Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed as a tribute to the hard work being carried out by the Kelly Mine Preservation Society(KMPS) who since 1984 have been restoring this Micaceous Hematite mine back to it's former glory.

The cache is placed on the public bridleway to the side of the mine and is not in the mine grounds.Access to the mine is limited to Wednesdays and Sundays where a member of the society should be present to give you a guided tour around. When the site is open a red road cone is displayed outside the wooden gate.
Mining was carried out here from as early as 1797, finally finishing in 1951.The mine is unique in having a substantial amount of original mining machinery and equipment on site.
The Micaceous Hematite ore was crushed and ground down and finally dried ,before being shipped out in barrels in a fine dust like state. One of the main uses being as an additive in the pigment of anti-corrosive paints, as it has superb rust-resisting properties.
