RED NINE RETURNED TO CRANLEIGH
This cache is placed close to where we watched the Red Arrows display at Cranleigh School Charitable Ball on 18 June 2011.
The pilot of Red 9 for the 2011 season was Zane Sennet, who was educated at nearby Cranleigh School and trained as a Qualified Flying Instructor on the Hawk at RAF Valley. He flew the Harrier GR9 including tours in Afghanistan before joining the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – the Red Arrows. Zane has now finished his third and final year in the team and was the pilot of Red 9 for the 2011 season. He has experienced flying both on the right and left sides of the formation, having previously flown in the Red 2 and Red 5 positions.
This cache was placed the day before we heard the terrible news that Flt Lt Jon Egging, 33, from Rutland, was killed when his Hawk T1 aircraft - Red 4 - crashed about 1km south east of Bournemouth Airport.
We were sorry to learn that Flt Lt Sean Cunningham, 35, died after being ejected from his Hawk whilst on the ground at RAF Scampton on 8 November 2011.
You may be able to park in the bus stop lay-by but as there is a 20 minute bus service here you may well cause an obstruction. Perhaps better to park at the nearby Garden Centre but please be careful when crossing the busy main road particularly if you have mini geocachers or geodogs with you.
04/08/19 following a maintenance visit, the cache has been replaced with a small black screw top container - large enough for some swaps / TB's.
