Last year I had such an enjoyable time working on Caching Phoenix - Like Its 2001, I decided to extend the challenge to include all of Maricopa County. Currently there are 29 of these Maricopa Classics (38 when placed). Finally, on July 31, 2011, I completed finding these classic geocaches. Now, with some adjustments to meet the current Challenge Cache guidelines, I am offering this challenge to the geocaching community.
The neat thing about these classic caches is that most all of them are placed in interesting places that take some effort to get to. Yes, some are urban caches but even those are well thought and fun to find. I always enjoy taking some time to read through the log book too. It's very interesting to see how logging habits have changed (devolved?) over the years.
In order to get a smiley for this cache, you will need to:
- Find 50 geocaches hidden in Maricopa County, AZ and placed within two years of the start of geocaching (Placed before May 2, 2002)
- 25 of those 50 need to have been placed before January 1, 2002. Currently there are 29 active geocaches that were, but your 25 may include archived geocaches that you have previously found. I'll also allow finding the relisted version of WESTWARD GO the Caches which is listed below, instead of the original (not both).
- Find and sign the log for this cache.
- Log your find on geocaching.com.
- Note the 50 qualifying caches and the find date for me. You may either put this information in your on line log or email it to me.
I hope you enjoy finding all the Maricopa Classics as much as I did! I also hope you enjoy finding this cache. I picked a location I feel is worthy of this challenge. Yes it is in the far north area of Maricopa County but the views are fantastic. When I placed this I spent several minutes watching many turkey vultures soaring very close by. From the cache, you can see where some of them may roost perhaps 15 yards away.
The listed difficulty and terrain rating is for this cache. It does not take into account the D/T rating of any of the qualifying caches. For a hint on one way to get here, check out Greasepot's log from nearby Witness Corner.
