El Premio European Green Capital es una iniciativa que reconoce el compromiso de las ciudades que trabajan a favor del medio ambiente y así situarlas como exponente de modo de vida urbano respetuoso con éste.

Vitoria-Gasteiz presentó su candidatura para ser European Green Capital 2012-2013, y en la primera fase ya dejó atrás a once ciudades del continente.

La capital de Euskadi es un referente en sostenibilidad. Los expertos supieron valorar su potencial medioambiental, no en vano compartió la final con ciudades como Barcelona, Malmö (Suecia), Nantes (Francia), Nuremberg (Alemania) y Reikiavik (Islandia).

El jurado compuesto por representantes Europeos, la Agencia Europea de Medio Ambiente, el Consejo Internacional para las Iniciativas Ambientales Locales (ICLEI), la Federación Europea para el Transporte y el Medio Ambiente (T&E), la Unión de Capitales de la Unión Europea y el Comité de las Regiones tomó la decisión de otorgar el galardón de European Green Capital a Vitoria-Gasteiz el 21 de octubre de 2010.

Este galardón supone el máximo reconocimiento a más de treinta años de propuestas e iniciativas respetuosas con el medio ambiente y a un compromiso de políticas de desarrollo sostenible.

Esto, unido al compromiso e implicación de la ciudadanía ha conducido finalmente a ser Green Capital en 2012. La capital de Euskadi se convierte en la primera ciudad española en obtener este galardón y la tercera de Europa tras Estocolmo y Hamburgo.

The European Green Capital Award is an initiative that acknowledges the commitment of cities that make an effort to improve the environment, making them an example of an environmentally respectful urban way of life.

Vitoria-Gasteiz submitted its candidacy for European Green Capital 2012-2013 and, in the first phase, overcame the competition from eleven other cities.

The capital of the Basque Country is a benchmark for sustainability and the experts were able to assess its environmental potential, as can be seen in the fact that it shared the final selection phase with cities like Barcelona (Spain), Malmö (Sweden), Nantes (France), Nuremberg (Germany) and Reykjavik (Iceland).

The jury, comprising representatives of the European Union, the European Agency for the Environment, the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E), the Union of Capitals of the European Union and the Committee of the Regions, took the decision to grant the European Green Capital Award to Vitoria-Gasteiz on October 21, 2010.

This award represents the greatest acknowledgement to over thirty years of environmentally respectful proposals and initiatives and a commitment to sustainable development policies.

This aspect, together with the commitment and involvement of citizens has enabled the city to become the Green Capital for 2012. The capital of the Basque Country is the first Spanish city to receive this recognition and the third in Europe after Stockholm and Hamburg.
