The Parkhurst MOTH Hall

Beware of Muggles.

Parkhurst:

African Realty Trust purchased the site from PJ Barnard in 1903.
According to the Star (15 Oct 1903) it was initially known as New Parktown, adjoining the then Herman Eckstein Park. (Now Zoo Lake - this land was donated in 1903 by Messrs Werrner, Beit & Co of London - it was 200 Acres)

The Name Parkhurst was 'invented' by a competition held for the neighbours with a considerable sum as the prize. (Total 300 Pounds)

15000 coupons were sold! the Judges were J.W. Quinn, A Rogaly and D Holt (Holt street is on the other side of the river)

49 People suggested the name - and each received 2 Pounds for the effort.

Some entrants tried to 'bribe' the judges by coming up with names like Quinntown, Rogalyburg and Holtville!

Initial price of the stands was 100 Pounds, offered over a 10 year installment. Today a stand (2011) will sell for around 1.2Mill Rands..

Interestingly enough the MOTH hall stands (3 of them) were 'given' to them. As the land was unsaleable, due to it being in the dip and rather soggy until around 1950 when a proper sewer system was put in place.

Now many houses are actually built on top of it. Only after this was the Northern side of Parkhurst actually developed.
