Lonehill, which lies just north of Witkoppen Road was
named after a solitary koppie (small hill) in the vicinity.
The solitary Lonehill koppie is one of very few
hills in this part of Johannesburg. Solitary it might stand, but it
is a very pretty koppie surrounded by rocky veld and little streams
and shrubs within the nature reserve where there are a few walks.
The nature reserve is usually open in the summer months when there
is no fire hazzard.
Those after a little space come to picnic in the
Lonehill Park over weekends and especially enjoy
the stroll around the little dam known as Lonehill Loch. Dog lovers
also bring their dogs for some excercise.
The Lonehill Park is very popular with the
local community and there are a number of annual events held here
including Arts in the Park usually held in May, a Dads and Sons
camp-out in May, Stargazing in June or July, Concerts in the Park
and Carols by Candle Light to name just a few.
