The Nelson Mandela Bridge was opened on July 20 2003 as part of the celebrations for former president Nelson Mandela's 85th birthday to improve direct access into the Newtown Cultural Precinct. Measuring 284 metres, it is the largest cable stayed bridge in South Africa.
Take the usual safety precautions for going into the city — be vigilant, don't carry valuables, don't go alone, etc. If you drive there, park your car in Braamfontein (wherever you feel it's safe — Juta Street is closest) and proceed on foot. The cache is a small grey magnetized container, hidden near the halfway mark as you cross the bridge using the pedestrian walkway. Be discreet about retrieving and replacing the cache — there is constant pedestrian traffic, as well as 24-hour video surveillance. (If you look suspicious, the police will arrive to ask you what you're doing there; good luck trying to explain geocaching to them.) Bring a pen to sign the log sheet (you will have to write small) and take care to replace the cache exactly where you found it.
