Geocache Description:

A cache by gjerjs and tormdel

Steam boats were introduced in Norway in 1826 (DS "Constitutionen" and DS "Prinds Carl"). Steam driven boats were from the mid 1800s up until 1940 very important means of transporting food, passengers and gods along the Norwegian coast. Every small town along the coast have their own "Steam boat quay". This is Leira's oldest.

ENGLISH:
This little quay is today used by locals and summer home owners in the area. The two buildings next to the cache are from the late 1800s when this quay was built to serve the steamboats that came here from Kristiansund (to the south) and via several stops, and further on to either Aure (to the east) or Smøla (to the north).

Old building on the quay

The small town a couple of hundred metres from the cache, is called "Leira" and it is the commercial centre of the Tustna island. Leira has to grocery stores, a garage, a small branch of the regional electrical company, a craft shop and a retirement home. Approxomately 400 people live in Leira, in addition to a couple of hundred summer homes.

The sound between this quay and "Gaut" islan (the one you can see just across the sound) is a calm passage along parts of the Tustna island. Fishing is good in this sound, and on nice summer days you might encounter vacationing summer house owners dwelling in a boat passing by here.

This little quay is not fancy, not well known, not spectacular in any way, but it is very typical of small and still used parts of the Norwegian coast line, and it deserves a cache.

The cache contains only a log, bring your own pen.
