135 miljoen jaar geleden was Limburg zeebodem. Dat zou ongeveer 60 miljoen jaar duren.Gedurende die periode heerst er een tropisch klimaat. In het warme zeewater onwikkeld zich een rijke flora en fauna. Daaronder bevinden zich veel kalkdiertjes.Als die sterven, zakken de kalkhoudende resten naar de bodem, waar ze zich mengen met kleideeltjes.Zo groeit er een kalklaag.Door het steeds dikker worden van de kalklaag en het stijgen van het landschap, komt deze laag aan de oppervlakte.Er ontstaat een plateau van kalk. Op het plateau worden zand en löss afgezet. Vele jaren later stroomt er een rivier over het plateau. Deze voert de löss en het zand mee ,daardoor komt de kalklaag aan de oppervlakte.Gedurende duizenden jaren slijt het riveirwater in op het kalkplateau. Trapsgewijs ontstaan diepe beddingen. Zo vormt zich de Schaelsberg.Door het inslijten van deze rivier maar ook door het schurende werking van andere rivieren en beken in Zuid-limburg ontstaat een landschap van dalen en plateaus.Het proces van watererosie gaat ook vandaag nog door. Langs de Schaelsberg stroomt de Geul, die zich steeds dieper insnijdt in de kalkbodem..

135 million years ago Limburg seabed. That would be about 60 million years to complete. During this period there is a tropical climate. In the warm sea developed a rich flora and fauna. Among them are many lime animals. If they die, the lower chalky residue on the bottom, where they mix with clay particles.
Grows as a lime layer. Due to the ever thickening of the limestone layer and the rise of the landscape, is this layer on the surface. There is a limestone plateau. On the plateau of sand and loess deposited. Many years later, a river flows across the plateau. It performs the loess and sand with it, thereby the limestone layer at the surface. For thousands of years wearing the river in the limestone plateau. Cascade created deep channels. Thus arose the Schaelsberg. By deepening of this river, but also by the abrasive action of other rivers and streams in southern Limburg creates a landscape of valleys and plateaus. The process of water erosion is still today. Along the Schaelsberg Geul flows, which are deeper cut into the limestone .
