Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the listed coordinates

The purpose of this cache is to teach my area geocachers about "geohashing" and hopefully encourage others to participate and maybe join up for a Saturday Meetup some time.

xckd is a comic strip by Randall Munroe that is described as "a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." Randall, himself, is a fan of geocaching as well as a computer and math geek.

In that spirit, he created geohashing, a "...method for finding an effectively random location nearby and visiting it: a Spontaneous Adventure Generator."

The image below is the comic strip that started it all. The Algorithm.

Fans of the comic decided to try it out. They started calculating daily hashpoints and exploring. A wiki was created for people to share their experiences just as geocachers log their finds.

Like all geek activities, it wasn't long before achievements were created. One of them is the Hash Collision Achievement where the day's geohash coincides with a pre-existing geocache.

Puzzle Clue

To find this cache, you will need to:

  1. Visit the geohashing wiki and use one of the tools provided to calculate the hash coordinates that would have caused the collision in the "Hash Collision Achievement" directly above.
  2. Make your heading 245.4 degrees true, distance 137.1 feet

Please calculate the range/bearing at home and do not attempt to visit the hash coordinates directly as they are on private property.

If you go on any future expeditions, please post a note here with the date and graticule. I will add your hashpoints as waypoints on this listing.

Note: The Algorithm generates coordinates in DD.dddddd format, so you may want to convert to DD MM.mmm as needed.
