Boxgrove Priory, Boxgrove
Boxgrove Priory is dedicated to St Mary and to St Blaise and is a Church of England Church within the Diocese of Chichester.
The existing church dates from the 12th Century, but the Domesday book mentions Boxgrove as a parish at the time, and records that an earlier church existed before the Norman Conquest.
Traces of this earlier church were removed by the building of the present building some 900 years ago. The Priory built in it's place was the daughter house of the Abbey of Lessay in Normandy and the grand-daughter of the great Benedictine Abbey of Bec. During Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monastries, the West end of the Priory was lost and the buildings fell into a state of disrepair.
While the church itself is cared for by the Church of England, the Priory remains are looked after by English Heritage. An information board near the parking location gives further history to the site.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
