Geocache Description:

Another in the Church Micro series. Can be done as a cache-and-dash. No need to go down alleyway! It's on the roadside.

The area of Kingsdown in Bristol was being built up in the late 18th century as gentry built their houses on the hill above Bristol. This new suburb was originally in the parish of St James, but, with a parish of 11,000 and a church that could only hold 1,500 a new church was required for the growing area. On the 26th August 1833 the foundation stone of St Matthew's church was laid in what was then Nine Tree Field; at the time there were few houses in the area. The church was consecrated in 1835. Stained glass windows commemorate William Tyndale, Thomas Cranmer, Charles Wesley and John Bunyan. In 1984 the parish was merged with St Nathanael's, the original St Nathanael's building now being the Elmgrove Centre. Proceeds from the sale of St Nathanael's helped with the conversion of St. Matthews which is now on two levels; with a hall below and the church above. The art historian Pevsner described the church as typical of late Georgian Gothic. If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list.
