The haunted area...
From the nineteenth century gunpowder and
dynamite was produced in the forest. By the dawn of the first world
war a large ordinance factory was built to increase production of
munitions. As World War 2 approached it became the Royal Ordnance
Factory and saw massive expansion. Close by was an RAF Airfield
Spitfires flew many sorties during the years of war, not
surprisingly there were many crashes as badly damaged aircraft
tried to make it home.
It is said that the ghost of an airman haunts to remains of the
Royal Ordnance Factory and the surrounding forest, carrying a
terrible curse, as anyone witnessing this vision is said to
die within the week of the sighting...
On
entering the park, several abandoned bunkers are visible, these
being the remains of the former Royal Ordnance Factory that closed
in 1965. Upon further exploration (particularly of the wooded
trails) many, many more bunkers and tunnels of differing sizes and
shapes can be found.
The woods and bunkers provided a focus point for an episode of
Living TV's Most Haunted, which was aired in April
200.
