Geocache Description:

St Kilda is a Scottish and World Heritage site located over 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides off the coast of Scotland. It has some of the highest sea cliffs and stacs in Europe, as well as supporting the largest seabird colony in the north-east Atlantic.

One of the main features on the larger island, Hirta, is the communication site located at 365 meters above sea level. When I placed this cache I was leading a team of Royal Air Force Aerial Erectors that were tasked with replacing the two larger Radomes that had been there for over 20 years. Before and after pictures will be up loaded on completion of the task.

The cache is located on the main island of Hirta and overlooks the sheltered bay where the ruins of the village abandoned in 1930 lie. The cache is a small magnetic key holder that holds signature sheets but no pen.

There is a FTF badge that has been provided by the Scottish Ten team that visited during my time on the island.

Their project uses highly precise, high speed terrestrial laser scanning systems, which enables them to accurately reproduce 3D images of the area being scanned. It was their GPS equipment and the help of James (one of the Scottish Ten team) that I was able to precisely place this cache.

The Scottish Ten team has completed scanning the World Heritage site of New Lanark. The first international assignment took the team to South Dakota to scan the faces of the American Presidents on Mount Rushmore National Monument in partnership with Cyark, the National Park Service and local specialists. They are now working to scan more of Scotland’s heritage sites including the Antonine Wall, Neolithic Orkney, the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, the Island of St Kilda (which they completed during my time on the island) plus five other international sites over the next few years.

FTF credit goes to Phil100, well done.

** Thanks to GCUK who has replaced the cache with a more hardy one which should stay the test of time.**
