csuffolk: Ce beau pont vaut une geocache - mais maintenant je ne peux pas faire le trajet pour maintenir. Je regrette beaucoup.

Geocache Description:

A disused suspension road bridge - now renovated for pedestrians/cyclists - over the river at Tonnay-Charente. Architecturally impressive and providing fine views from its carriageway.

The Tonnay-Charente Suspension Bridge ( total length 635m, main span 90m ) was built in 1841-2 to cross the River Charente. In 1884 there was reconstruction work carried out by the engineer Ferdinand Arnodin. In 1935 the metal structures were completely redone. From the mid 1960s the bridge was no longer used. Restoration 2007-9 has provided a pedestrian/cycle route between Tonnay-Charente and St-Hippolyte.

Enjoy walking this bridge for the views of the structure itself and of the town and surrounding countryside. Be sure to explore the underneath of the southern end which resembles the nave of a cathedral.

For an extra-special treat – not to be missed ! – visit the Pont Transbordeur which crosses the Charente between Rochefort and Martrou.

Medium-sized plastic box. Contents : Log, Pencil, Pack of cards, Trolley token key-ring (panda), Robin brooch, Badge, English coin, Marbles, ribbon, round of Bruxelles lace (50 years old!).
