Alsume’s 19th cache is a simple multi that takes you to a
location involving some local history in Coburg. You will be
required to get some facts from an information board and then use
it to find the cache, which is not far away.
At the headline coordinates you will be in front of an information
sign for the Lincoln Mills, the chimney of which still stands near
the sign at this location. Lincoln Mills was a substantial textile
mill which opened on this site in 1919, carrying out all stages of
textile manufacture, and also supplying yarn to other
factories.
Following the purchase of the company by Cleckheaton in the 1950s,
part of the Lincoln Mills factory was sold off or leased for other
uses including carpet weaving and cigarette paper manufacture.
Cleckheaton closed down the remainder of the operations at Lincoln
Mills in 1980.
In 2006 the site was sold for retail development, and is now home
to the Lincoln Mills Homemaker Centre, and includes a Bunnings,
Clive Peeters, Officeworks, Fenix Fitness Centre, Amway, a pet
supplies shop, storage shop, and more. Parts of the original
significant heritage buildings were retained to record the history
of the site.
