Ringo, John,
Paul e George formaram o grupo de música mais bem sucedido da
História da Humanidade. Apelidados de tantos nomes, The Beatles
saltaram das margens do rio Mersey, em Liverpool, para o dia-a-dia
dos cidadãos do mundo. Parece exagerado? Nenhuma outra banda, num
tão curto tempo de produção (lançaram 13 álbuns ao longo da década
de 60) conseguiu o fanatismo gerado pelos Fab Four. Não marcaram
uma década, mas transformaram, gerações atrás de gerações, o mundo
que vivemos. E continuam a mudar.
Inicialmente, o quarteto formado
por cinco elementos (sem Ringo Starr, e com Pete Best e Stuart
Stutcliffe) tocava em bares e clubes da sua cidade natal e de
Hamburgo, Alemanha. Neste período, que compreende os três primeiros
anos da década, os Beatles eram conhecidos pelo seu êxtase em palco
(patrocinado por uma gama de drogas e medicamentos que o seu
manager – George Martin – receitava) e pela sua inata
habilidade de gerar problemas; inclusive, Paul McCartney foi preso
por incendiar um clube rival utilizando um preservativo em
chamas.
Pouco tempo depois, Stutcliffe
morre e Best é substituído por Ringo, a conformação da banda
manteve-se até 1970, quando se separaram. A sua estridente
transatlântica legião de fãs acompanha-os na sua evolução, ao passo
que as estrelas lideram e apadrinham as revoluções culturais e
sociais da época, levando a música a um pico de sofisticação. Do
material que produziram, nasceram ideias, debates, críticas,
manifestações e um sem-número de valores e ideais que ainda hoje
são proclamados com orgulho. Hinos como “All you need is
love”,“Back in the USSR” e
“Yesterday” são espalhados em toda a espécie de
publicidade.
A violenta morte do génio John
Lennon abalou o mundo em 1980. Vinte um anos mais tarde, George
Harrison, um dos melhores guitarristas da história, abandona-nos
vítima de um cancro do pulmão. Hoje, quer Ringo quer Paul vivem não
da música mas “pela música”, hábito ganho há já várias
décadas.
Estranhamente, os Beatles nunca
deram um concerto em Portugal, apesar da estreita relação de Paul
McCartney com o sul do país. Talvez por isso mesmo, não exista
nenhuma homenagem física a nenhum dos Fabulous Four em território
luso.

Ringo, John, Paul and George
formed the most successful musical group in history. Baptized with
so many names, The Beatles jumped out from the Mersey shore, in
Liverpool, and crashed into everyone’s day. No other band
accomplished such world wide hysteria, in such a short period of
time for musical production (they released 13 studio albums back at
the 60’s). The Fab Four hadn’t just coined a decade,
they changed, generation after generation, the world that we live
in today. They keep on changing.
Initially, the five member quartet
(without Ringo, and with Pete Best and Stuart Stutcliffe) used to
play at Liverpool’s and Hamburg’s clubs. In this
period, which comprehends the three first of the decade, The
Beatles were known for their arousing gigs (sponsored by a drugs
mix provided by their manager, George Martin) and their
unbelievable natural ability to create such a mess wherever they
were; for instance, Paul McCartney went into jail by trying to set
a rival club on fire with an aflame condom.
Shortly thereafter, Stutcliffe
dies and Best is replaced by Ringo; the band conformation lasted
until 1970, when they separated. Their legion of raucous fans
accompanies them on their development, while the band try to follow
and embrace the cultural and social revolutions that world was
experimenting, bringing music to a peak of sophistication. All that
they produced became matter to the others, ideas were born,
debates, critiques, strikes and a mess of values that are still
proudly proclaimed. Hymns like "All You Need Is Love," "Back in the
USSR" and "Yesterday" are spread in all sorts of advertising.
The violent and unexpected death
of the genius John Lennon shocked the world in 1980. Twenty-one
years later, George Harrison, one of the best guitar players of all
times, died of lung cancer. Today, both Ringo and Paul live their
lives not in music but “for the music”, something
learning a while back ago.
Curiously, The Beatles never had a
public appearance in Portugal, despite the close relationship of
McCartney by the country’ southern regions. Maybe because of
that, there’s still lacking a physical tribute the Fab Four
on Portuguese territory.
