Climb a 6008 m mountain and find a cache in an altitude of 5944 metres!
The Uturuncu is a half active vulcan, you can see and smell different fumaroles, which are emiting a vapor of sulphur. The Uturuncu is a part of the Cordillera Lipez and is a little bit out of the way, that is the reason why only a few people climb this mountain. Among all 6000 m moutains in the world the Utruncu is the easiest to climb. At the top you will have a splendid view all over the Sud Lipez area.
It’s necessary that you are equipped with gloves, trekkingboots and sometimes you will need climbing irons, that depends of the snow situation (especial in wintertime). Technically you don’t need a preparation, but the altitude can produce physical problems. If it is very windy, it could be difficult to reach the top. The Sud Lipez region is a very dry area and in the altitude of 6000m usually you only can find a little bit of snow.
How to get there?
By 4 x 4 Jeep (Landcruiser) you have 2 optiones:
• Uyuni – Quetena Chico: 6-7 h
• Laguna Colorada – Quetena Chico: 3 h
The easiest and cheapest way is to organize the tour in Uyuni.
It is recommendable to do the Salar Tour to the Laguna Verde and on the way back to take the route to the region of Sud Lipez. It is only one more day with spectacular views. You can do it all in 4 days / 3 nights. If you only want to climb the Uturuncu you can do it from Uyuni inclusive the return way in 2 days.
From Quetena Chico:
04:00 h in the morning leaving Quetena Chico by 4 x 4.
06:00 h you will reach an altitude of 5500 m.
From that point you will need 3 – 4 h to the top of the Uturuncu by foot.
30 min before you will reach the top, you can find the cache at a place which is sheltered from the wind.
On the return path from the top you will need 2 h to the 4 x 4.

Guide:
The driver / guide should know the route very well to Quetena Chico (it is easy to get lost, if you don’t know the way), also to the start of climbing the guide should know the way.
To the way to the top of the Uturuncu you don’t need a guide. The way to the top is easy to find (see map).

Escala una montaña de 6008 m y encuentra un cache, en una altura de 5944 metros!
El Uturuncu es un volcán no completamente apagado, puedes ver y oler las distintas fumarolas, que huelen a asufre. Por su lejanía en la Cordillera de Lípez, muy poca gente escala el Uturuncu. Entre todas las montañas de mas de 6000 m, el Uturuncu es la más fácil para escalar en todo el mundo. En la címa vas a tener una maravillosa vista sobre la región de Sud Lipez.
Es necesario que lleves guantes, ropa caliente, botas de excursionista y a veces se necesita usar grampones, dependiendo de la situación de nieve (en época de invierno).
Técnicamente no se nececita ninguna preparación, pero la altura puede causar problemas físicos. En temporada de viento fuerte, es muy difícil escalar hasta la cima.
La región de Sud Lipez, es una región desértica y en esta altura hay poco o no hay nieve.
Como llegar?
Con un coche de 4 x 4 (Landcruiser), 2 opciones:
• Uyuni – Quetena Chico: 6-7 h
• Laguna Colorada – Quetena Chico: 3 h
En Uyuni es mas fácil encontrar personas que quieren hacer el mismo tour, eso hace el tour mas barato.
Es recomendable hacer el completo tour de Salar hasta la Laguna verde y a la vuelta a Uyuni, pasan por Sud Lipez. Es solamente un dia más de viaje con espectaculares paisajes. Todo se puede hacer en 4 dias y 3 noches. Si quieres solamente escalar el Uturuncu, puedes hacer eso desde Uyuni incluyendo el retorno, en 2 dias.
Desde Quetena Chico:
04:00 h en la mañana salida con 4 x 4.
06:00 h llegada a una altura de 5500 m con 4 x 4.
Desde este punto necesitas 3 – 4 h hasta el pico.
30 min antes del pico, vas a encontrar el cache en un lugar protegido del viento.
Al regreso, desde la cima del Uturuncu hasta el coche de 4 x 4, necesitas 2 h
Desnivel para escalar:
Aprox. 500 m.
Hospedaje:
En Quetena Chico existen hostales simples.
Guía:
El conductor / guía debería saber bien la ruta (es fácil perderse si no conocen el camino)
hasta Quetena Chico y hasta el lugar de ultimo acceso con 4 x 4 (aprox. 5500 m).
Para la subida hasta la cima del Ururuncu no es nececario contratar un guía especial de montaña. El camino hasta la cumbre es facil para encontar (véase mapa).
