VEREDA DO CALHAU

Começamos a nossa subida atravessando uma velha ponte sobre a Ribeira de São Jorge. Uma ponte que data do século dezasseis. Um breve olhar nostálgico sobre a íngreme vereda que vamos começar a subir lembra-nos que as gentes de Santana tinham de subir por ali com as mercadorias descarregadas no Velho cais de São Jorge. Junto ao Calhau existiu a primeira Igreja Paroquial e uma pequena capela em honra de S. Sebastião. Este sítio, foi assim o mais importante pólo comercial do Norte da Ilha da Madeira. Atravessar este pequeno pólo, hoje quase fantasma, transporta-nos a um tempo longínquo da nossa historia que apesar de tudo deixou marcas na nossa forma de ser e estar.

We begin our climb through an old bridge over the Ribeira de São Jorge. A bridge dating from the sixteenth century. A brief nostalgic look at the steep path that we will begin to rise reminds us that the people of Santana had to climb up there with the goods unloaded from the St. George old pier. Near Calhau there was the first parish church and a small chapel in honor of St. Sebastian.

This site was thus the most important commercial hub of the North Island of Madeira. Going through this small site, now almost empty, transports us to a distant time in Madeira's history who nonetheless left its mark on the way of being of its people.
