Geocache Description:

Following on from the success of the introductory walk in the Annalong Valley, this is the first of two planned walk in the high Mournes which will take in the seven peaks over 700m during the course of the two trips.

There are seven peaks in the Mournes above 700m. Every year there is a single organised walk that sees all seven visited in the one day (this year 6th August). To make the experience of visiting the peaks more accessible to non mountain goats we'll be doing it in 2 separate trips. We'll be meeting at the Trassey Road Car Park (cache coordinates) at 09:30 on Saturday 16th July. It is not necessary to complete the whole walk to log attendance but it is hoped attendees will at least try to do some of it.

The route will see us climb Meelmore via Spellack, go onto Meelmore before hitting the day's high point at Slieve Bernagh. From there we drop down to Hare's Gap where the group can decide whether it has the legs to visit the Shelter Stone at Ben Crom before heading back to the car park or turn for home at this point. With a few scenic detours, walking distance should be similar to the last day (in the order of 18-20km) with signifcantly more height gain (c 1800m.) While a lot of the hike will be on track or following the wall, sections of the walk will be off track. Any hillwalking is not without risk. Going unprepared compromises your safety and potentially those with you. With this in mind you will need proper equipment, footwear and clothing, especially raingear, appropriate to walking in the mountains. Food and water for a full day should also be carried.
