düg: Regretfully I am archiving the caches in this series. Each time I drive up here it seems the local residents are making it harder and harder to find a parking spot. Last time I was up there I saw a notice that a gate was going to be installed blocking the road all together. It's a shame as it is a wonderful place to take a hike. Not sure where you can gain legal access. There is a free container here for any one that wants it.

Geocache Description:

A cammoed PB jar

A young Marine stationed at nearby Camp Pendleton drove his date to a dark and deserted Lovers' Lane high above San Marcos just north of the area known as Spooks Canyon. In those days San Marcos looked quite different than it does today. Where today sit strip malls and the campus of CSUSM there were just row after row of cow pastures. The town was just a sleepy little hamlet of less than 20,000. After sundown it was mostly dark and anyone driving up to Spooks Canyon had only the lights of Oceanside or Escondido to gaze upon. With some mood music on the radio the young couple soon became engrossed in other activities. A short while later the music was interrupted by a strained announcer's voice warning that a convicted murderer had just escaped from the Questhaven Insane Asylum, just down the trail from Lover’s Lane. Listeners were warned to report any sightings of the dangerous fugitive to the police immediately. His frightening visage was further distinguished by a hook instead of a right hand. The Marine, feeling bold, locked all the doors and attempted to resume his amorous activities, assuring his date they would be safe despite her pleas to take her home. Hearing a noise outside the car she became frantic and pushed him away, insisting that they leave. Relenting, the boy peevishly jerked the car into gear and spun its wheels as he pulled out of the parking space. When they arrived in Oceanside at the girl's house, she got out of the car and, reaching to close the door, began to scream uncontrollably. The boy ran to her side to see what was wrong. There, dangling from the door handle, was a bloody hook…
