EN: Bridge to nowhere - cache located near Curral Boieiros (north of Fonte Salgada)

PT: Ponte sem Destino - cache localizado próximo de Curral Boieiros (norte de Fonte Salgada)

EN: Just north of the peaceful village of Curral Boieiros is a strange bridge that has caused much discussion over the years. It is approximately 35 metres long and consists of two sides with a narrow gap in the middle to allow a stream to pass through. The bridge crosses between two rocky hillsides and is very solidly constructed. PT: A norte da tranquila aldeia de Curral Boieiros há uma ponte estranha que tem causado muita discussão ao longo dos anos. Tem aproximadamente 35 metros de comprimento e consiste em dois lados com uma abertura estreita no meio para passar um ribeiro. A ponte cruza entre duas encostas rochosas e é tem uma construção bastante sólida.

EN: What makes it strange is that neither end of the bridge goes anywhere apart from straight into the hillside. There is no tunnel, no road or railway line going across it. So, what was it built for? There are several theories from road bridge, to railway bridge to a dam to hold back water. The last local I spoke to said it was a road bridge but normally roads are constructed to the edge of a gap and then a bridge built across the gap and the road continued. EN: There is also another bridge across the nearby river. Walk up the dirt track at N37d 10.963 and W07d 37.753 for approximately 250 metres and look to your right (or follow the tarmac road to N37d 11.063 and W7d 37.836). This bridge is also strange as it has no roads leading to it. Only the supporting pillars and a central buttress in the middle of the river can be seen. I hope you find the bridges interesting and perhaps you can work why they are there! The cache is a small plastic box. PT: Existe também uma outra ponte sobre um rio próximo. Caminhe até ao caminho de terra, com as coordenadas N37d 10.963 e W07d 37.753 por aproximadamente 250 metros e olhe para a direita (ou siga pela estrada de alcatrão até N37d 11.063 and W7d 37.836). Esta ponte também é estranha uma vez que não tem estradas de acesso à ponte, conseguindo verem-se apenas os pilares de sustentação e um reforço no centro no meio do rio.
