From the second
stage of part
three there are a few different ways of getting here.
Firstly, you
could just straight-line it across the heather and reeds, straight
to the cache - the old stone ruin it's adjacent to is easily
visible from No3, on the other side of the little valley. However,
this would involve crossing the narrow stream, and the area around
here can get quite wet under foot - believe me!
Alternatively, you could head off towards the fence to
the south, and then sweep in at ninety degrees to the ruin -
however this is all a bit round-about, and there's a much simpler
route you can follow instead. If you continue along the footpath
you were on earlier, you will walk along the side of a little
plantation - part of the Glion Gill network of forestry. After a
short period you will find yourself on the road-like track which
runs all the way through the plantations - turn to the left, and
follow this down and over the bridge. As you ascend up the other
side, you will arrive at a gate. Running off to the left from the
gate is a fence - and if you follow this along, you will soon
arrive at the GZ.
The cache
location itself is next to an old stone ruin (hence the title),
which has a nice view up over some of the plantations further
north. If you were planning on bringing a picnic, I would recommend
having it here - generally you want to eat around the middle of a
walk, and the ground around No3 can be a little damp, and though at
No5 the views are spectacular it gets quite windy up there, so this
is the ideal spot. You can find a flat boulder to sit on, and look
up at the track you just came down. The area here is quite
sheltered by the hillsides and trees, and depending on the time of
day can become a right little suntrap.
The cache
itself is a standard NATO ammo can, shoved in some rocks. Though
the ruin itself is a little overcome with nettles (as many of its
type are, sadly), the cache is well away from any chance of getting
stung. I doubt you'll have to keep an eye out for muggles around
here!
