De Banken The Banks

De Banken is een duingebied gelegen aan de Westlandse duinenkust tussen Monster en Hoek van Holland. Het duingebied bestaat grotendeels uit een dubbele duinregel. Het is het smalste deel van de duinen van het Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland. Twee laaggelegen natte duinvalleien bij 's-Gravenzande geven dit duingebied haar naam: De Banken. Het gebied is ca. 90 ha groot.

The dune area of "De Banken" (The Banks) is located on the dune coast of the Westland area between Monster and Hoek van Holland. This dune area largely consistst of a double row of dunes. this is the narrowest part of the dunes located within the area covered by the Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland. Two of the lower dune valleys near 's-Gravenzande give this dune area its name: The Banks. The area covers an area of approximately 90 hectares.

Voorgeschiedenis History

De Banken kennen een lange geschiedenis. Al op de kaart van Nicolaus Cruquius uit 1712 is 'De Banck' al te zien als een ongeveer 500 meter brede polder gelegen tussen een relatief breed duingebied en de Noordlandse dijk. Door landaanwinning aan de landkant en afslag aan de zeekant is de huidige vorm ontstaan.

The Banks have a long history. It was already shown on a map by Nicolaus Cruquius from 1712 as 'De Banck'. On this map, it is shown as a polder of about 500 meters wide between the relatively wide dune area and the Noordhollanse dijk. The current layout gradually formed because of land reclamation on the land side and coastal erosion.

De Natuur Nature

De Banken maken onderdeel uit van het Natura 2000 gebied Solleveld & Kapittelduinen. Het is het meest noordelijke deel van de Kapittelduinen. Vooral de natte laagten van duinvalleien zijn van grote betekenis voor planten en vogels. Het Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland heeft De Banken daarom benoemd tot 'waterparel': wateren met een bijzondere actuele of potentiële natuurwaarde. Ook de duinen zijn echter van grote waarde, zowel voor flora en fauna als landschappelijk. De Banken kennen een rijk broedvogelbestand maar zijn ook belangrijk voor planten, paddenstoelen (o.a. wasplaten), insecten en amfibieën. Zo kent De Banken een grote populatie rugstreeppadden en zandhagedissen. Ook in de winter zijn De Banken van groot belang voor overwinterende en langstrekkende vogels.

The Banks are part of the Natural 2000 area of Solleveld & Kapittelduinen. It is the most northerly part of Kapittelduinen. The wet lower areas of the dune valleys are especially important for plants and birds. Because of this, the Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland has named The Banks as a "water-pearl": waters with a special current or potential value to nature. The dunes are also important, for animal and plant life, but for ecology in general. The banks are host to a large number of birds for nesting, but are also important for plants, toadstools, insects and amfibians. For example, The Banks has a large number of Natterjack Toads and Sand Lizards. In winter, the area is especially important to migrating birds.
