Geocache Description:

The orthodox christian Church of St Edwards is the estates own church in the hamlet of Athelhampton, and is separated from the house and gardens by the old A35.

It was built in 1861 of course rubble-stone walls with freestone dressings,to replace the older church which stood much closer to the house, it was designed by the firm Hick's of Dorchester whom Thomas Hardy worked for, and he wrote in his diary that he had set out the building on the first day of work.

In 1975 with dwindling population and the church in poor repair and services in nearby Puddletown and Tolpuddle services ceased. The church was then purchased by the Athelhampton estate repaired and used for many years as a store.

In 1996 Father john started an orthodox congregation and the church was dedicated to St Edward King & Martyr who died at Corfe castle in AD978. Sadly Father John died in 2001 but the congregation continues to worship and grow, the church has much restoration in the past few years including refurbishing the Italians bells.

There is ample parking in the car park of Athelhampton house which is used by the church congregation and villagers.

If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would ask that you contact Sadexploration first so he can keep track of the church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a church micro stats page found via the bookmarks list.

To find the cache you have to find in the grounds of the church a bench in memory of Dennis Watts ABCD - EFGH

The cache which is a camo micro container is not hidden in the grounds of the church, but can be found after a short walk at:
N 50. 44. (H-A)(E-A)C - W 002.19.(C+D)(H-B)E

Checksum for the whole co-ordinates = 48.

Congratulations for FTF to The Bull Family
