Time for Darkness Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Louise_Gerhard: We have to say goodbye to this one. The photos from Rolf is great and a copy of them is now with me. For all those that attended thanks a million. It was good to watch the moon with the cachers. The sighting was clear and it is one of the best we can remembered. We also need to thank the reviewer for allowing this event. In 2018 we will meet again. Gerhard, Petra, Abigail.

Geocache Description:

A lunar eclipse is when the earth is casting a shadow on the moon. A lunar eclipse was experienced during February 2008 and as a family we watched this at Ermelo and it was quite amazing. During a lunar eclipse there is no danger of UV radiation when one look at the eclipse with the naked eye.

During 15 June 2011 a total lunar eclipse will be visible. The moon will enter the earth’s shadow at 21h22 and at 23:03 it will start to leave the earth’s umbra shadow.

As a family we will watch this phenomena at Marievale. We do study astrology and this is of significance for the star sign Gemini. Permission is obtained to gather for this event. Feel free to join us. Marievale is far from any lights and fog and if the weather and clouds play along we should have a good view. During this total lunar eclipse, the moon will most likely have a dark copper red hue on it due to the quantity of the blue light that will be removed by the earth's atmosphere through the scattering of small particles, letting mainly the red part of the sunlight through.  Please study the above photo.

  • What: Just a braai and a get together for those that are interested. You can stay for as long as you want. We will probably leave at about 23h30. If you are not interested in a barbeque than that is also ok.
  • When: 15 June 2011 at 20h00.
  • Where Marievale Reserve.

There are no entrance fees. You have to bring along your own wood, meat, drinks, OBS, cutlery and chairs. There are toilets at the area; there are also covered areas with tables. Bring enough wood to make sure that you stay warm. Also bring a blanket to wrap around you. Please remember that it will be cold and that Rachael de Beer is not with us.
