The

Wayward Wanderers of

Melderyn

present:

Pyramid

Thousands of years before the Egyptians were using the pyramid for their burial of Pharaohs, The Wayward Wanderers used the pyramid shape for many things. It would be used to indicated a storage place for food or munitions. Often seen at the gates of a city, it could be used for defensive purposes. Some of the more dubious Wanderers used the pyramid to lure unsuspecting commoners in it with claims of untold wealth and the ability to get rich quick. Probably the most famous pyramid was the Dragolian Samtor Pyramid. This was a device conceived by Dragolian Mages of the Never Ending Forest, and used by the Wanderers to train their apprentices. The device was similar to a Rubiks Cube, where you could rotate individual sections and change the numbers. There is, of course a slight problem. Unlike the cube, a Pyramid is not equal on all sides, so the Dragolian Mages came up with a method to move the vertical sections. Lets look a little closer at the Pyramid. Above you can see a pyramid; a square bottom and 4 triangular sides coming to a point. Now lets "unfold" the Pyramid and make it into a 2D object like the one below. Some of you may have already seen this sort of thing in another cache.

We are looking at this pyramid from the top with the sides unfolded. Notice the base of this pyramid is 11 X 11. The sides would normally be something like the partially unfolded pyramid below.

If you were to place numbers in this Dragolian Samtor Pyramid, it would look like the picture below.

This pyramid is 7 tiers high including the base. Remember to picture this like a rubiks cube. Looking from the top, you would be able to move any one of the tiers clockwise or counterclockwise. For instance, if you were to move the third tier from the top, clockwise once the numbers at the front would now be on the left side and the left numbers at the back and so forth. Remember the numbers would maintain their position and the 46923 as seen from the front would be seen as the same viewed from the left side. Please remember this as you go through the puzzle. That takes care of the horizontal movement.

Now the vertical movement is quite different because the the pyramids shape. You would not be able to rotate the sections by one positon as you do in a rubiks cube, because the edges would not line up. Therefore the Dragolian Mages devised the pyramid sections to slide, much like the rubber track on a date stamp. (Don't ask me how they did it; they are the mages, not me. I'm just trying to place a cache.) For instance, lets look at the picture with the numbers. At the front side of the pyramid, the center column of the side would be considered 0. That would be the column that reads from the top of the pyramid to the base 729945. The columns to the right of that would be considered R1, R2 and to the left L1, L2. If we were to shift the center column down 5 places, the numbers at the front would shift 5 places down, at the bottom 5 places back, the back side would shift 5 places up, similar movement to a track on a bulldozer. Now if we were to do the same thing to the third column to the right, things get a little more complicated. You would still shift 5 places down at the front, 5 places back on the bottom and 5 places up at the back. Now the additional movement. The front and back columns do not actually meet so you would have to slide from the back around the side and then down the front to maintain the track. For instance the 7 at the top of the back of the third column to the right would move to the 4 on the side and the 1 at the side would move to the top of the front replacing the 8. You may be able to visualize this better by looking at the partially unfolded pyramid.

Now to the actual puzzle. Normally the Dragolian Samtor Pyramid has a pattern of colors that you would have to line up to solve it. We will not have you do that. The semifinals of this series has a number of moves you will have to make with the pyramid. Once you have completed the moves correctly, you will take the information from the orange and blue shaded areas for your coords. Please note that when moving the numbers around on the pyramid, you do not move the colors. They are positional for after the final move has been made and are where you will get the coords from. All movements given will be as looking from the top or the front. Good luck and have fun. Enjoy.

The Wayward Wanderers were a group of Rangers from a bygone Dungeons and Dragons era. Coming from the Kingdom of Melderyn, near the Never Ending Forest, in the mystical Land of Noth, they used their skills in tracking and living off the land to quest by themselves or to help others find gold, gems and other treasures, much like the modern day cacher of today. Their free spirit and inquisitive minds allowed them to develop many of today’s modern ideas and conveniences. A little sneaky at times, they have left several puzzle caches for the modern day cacher to enjoy.
