This series follows footpaths and tracks through woodland where
walkers are welcome. The area is much quieter than the top of
Gummer's How and provides a peaceful walk with some gentle
challenges of terrain along the way. Some 'off-road'
exploration will be needed, and some of the tracks can be
boggy. Mostly the walking is great, with changing scenery
from dark plantation, open fell, and beautiful oak woodland.
If you've not visited Gummer's How, it can be included in the
circuit. The series is described anti-clockwise but equally
nice going the other way.
From the suggested parking, 40m NE along the road to the
footpath into the wood. A grassy track leads on into the dark
plantation. Pass the return track coming down from the left,
and continue to a short footpath sign. Turn R past a ruin and
out of the wood into the light. Ahead is the delightfully
named Whinny Knott, from which you can get a lovely view on a clear
day. Cache is a black tub.
After quieting the horses it's onto Boardwalk.
