The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries, tombstones and local lore.
The George W. Davis Cemetery features an official historical marker from the state of Texas plus one posted by a private group. Details vary a bit between the two. The cemetery may have been active as early as 1845, but the earliest recorded grave is dated from 1851. One online source lists 89 known burials here, but one of the signs claims there may be as many as a hundred or so. It was closed in 1918. The site is relatively well-maintained--it has at least been mown and someone has stacked up some of the dead tree limbs. However, some of the headstones are in pieces on the ground, although others show some evidence of earlier repairs.
The site is enclosed by a chain link fence. The gate is not locked, but you need not enter the grounds as the cache is just off the street. As always, any refinements to the listed coordinates as provided by cache-seekers are welcomed.
