Geocache Description:

Pokey Plodders Get the Goat
Join the Pokey Plodders for a family hike
and BYOB (Bring your Own Basket) picnic!

From Washington Trails: A spectacular backcountry lake - one of the largest in the area - awaits those who walk this way. Once the site of a bustling mining operation, complete with company town and lakeside hotel, Goat Lake boasts plenty of history along with its fine views. Waterfalls too!

Who:

You! Come meet new and "old" cachers, ask questions about challenge caches, get recommendations for interesting caches, and find out about fun caches for kids--maybe find someone to go along on your next caching expedition!

One exception: This hike/event is planned for families and adult cachers only. IF YOU ARE UNDER 18, YOU MUST COME WITH A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN. NO UNACCOMPANIED MINORS, PLEASE.

We're the Pokey Plodders--that means that we travel at the pace of a distracted four-year-old, take lots of breaks photo stops, yeah, photo stops, that's it, and plan hikes that anyone is welcome to join. This one is longish, but not too hard.

What to Bring:

A picnic lunch for your group; lots of water; the 10 Essentials; appropriate clothing for the area, the activity, and the weather (rain or shine!); sunscreen; your TBs, coins, and pathtags to share or trade; your camera; your best caching stories; LOTS OF BUG SPRAY.

You will need a NW Forest Pass, available at the Verlot Ranger Station or at gas stations and shops along the Mountain Loop Highway. This is a good reason to share a ride with other cachers!

When:

Saturday, September 10, 2011, all day. Details to follow, but save the date!

Where:

Goat Lake, off the Mountain Loop Highway
Round Trip Distance--8.5-10.5 miles
Elevation Gain--1400 ft
Highest Point--3161 ft

Driving Directions:

From Granite Falls, follow the Mountain Loop Highway east for 31 miles to Barlow Pass and the end of the pavement. Continue for 3.5 miles, turning right onto Forest Road 4080. (From Darrington the turnoff is 19.5 miles along the Mountain Loop Highway.) Follow FR 4080 for 0.8 mile to the road end and trailhead for Elliott Creek Trail No. 647 (elev. 1900 ft).

I'll be at the parking area at eight a.m. If you have kids or like a leisurely pace, you might want to make an early start, but if you're a faster hiker, feel free to start later. The event logbook will be available at the lake, not at the parking lot.
