Der Ölberg liegt markant zwischen Dossenheim und Schriesheim am Rand des Odenwaldes. Schon von der Rheinebene aus ist der ehemalige Steinbruch zu erkennen, der wie ein riesiges Amphitheater wirkt. Der Ölberg und die umliegenden Wälder sind seit 1998 Naturschutzgebiet. Heute können sich Wanderer an dichten Wäldern, zwitschernden Vögeln und einer phänomenalen Aussicht erfreuen. Aber auch Drachenflieger und Kletterer haben einen naturverträgliche Möglichkeit gefunden, hier ihrem Hobby nachzugehen.
An den Abbruchwänden des Steinbruchs kann man die Entsehung des hier typischen Quarzporphyrs untersuchen. Dieses rosafarbene Gestein ist im jüngerenen Rotliegend entstanden und erreicht teilweise die Mächtigkeit von über 100 Metern. Die im Felsen vorkommenden verästelnden Strukturen erscheinen wie Fossilien, sie sind aber durch einsickerndes manganhaltiges Wasser entstanden. Die hier künstlich und natürlich entstandenen vielfältigen Landschaftsformen bieten Raum für seltene und schützenswerte Pflanzen- und Tierarten.
Das Naturschutzgebiet kann über einen Rundweg erkundet werden. Die Burgruinen Schauenburg und Strahlenburg können über Abstecher erreicht werden. Wie in allen Naturschutzgebieten gilt auch hier, dass die Wege nicht verlassen werden dürfen. Für den Steinbruch besteht ein Betretungsverbot mit Ausnahme der Korridorregelung fürs Klettern.

The Ölberg is remarkable visible between Dossenheim and Schriesheim at the edge of the Odenwald. Already from the Rhine valley, the quarry is visible and looks like a giant amphitheater. In 1998, the Ölberg and its surrounding forests were declared as a conservation area. Since this decalaration, hikers can enjoy the forest, chirping birds and a phenomenal view to the Rhine valley. But also hang and para gliders as well as mountain climbers found nature-friendly ways to practice their hobby.
At the precipice of the quarry the origination of the typical rhyolite can be examined. This pink rock was formed during the Rotliegend (early Permian) age and reaches here a thickness of over 100 meters. Small ramifications in the rock appear as fossils, but they were caused by manganese-containing water infiltration. The various natural and artificial landscapes provide now space for rare and valuable plants and animals.
The conservation area can be explored via a circular hiking route. In addition, the ruins of castles Schauenburg and Srahlenburg can be visit by small detours. As in all nature reserves, you have to stay on the marked paths. For the quarry, there is a general prohibition of access with the exception of the corridors for climbing.
