Do not attempt this cache without proper gear and climbing
experience. A fall could be fatal.
This cache is placed on the summit of Capitol Dome in the Florida
Mountains. The cache will require some class 3 and class 4
scrambling/climbing with exposure. You probably won't need to
protect the ascent but you will certainly want to rappel the
descent. Since I found no beta on this one I'll briefly describe
the route I took.
From parking, I hiked up to the base of the rock aiming for the
huge cut on the south side. I then followed that all the way up
negotiating some dry falls, sliding along an angled shelf, and
eventually climbing/scrambling up the steep slab/wall. Once I
reached the top of this spire, the actual highpoint was just a
short scramble away. All along, I was able to find good holds and
the climbing felt comfortable. I made 5 rappels on the descent
setting up anchors along the way.
Apparently this peak hardly ever gets climbed. I saw no evidence of
anyone being up there either along my route or at the summit. I
build a small cairn on the peak and left a makeshift summit
register.
Be careful, have fun, and be on the lookout for Ibex!
