Stompy: Time for this one to go. It's gone missing too many times, but it brought plenty of smiles whilst it was out there.

Alfred compiled “The Doom Book”, a code of Saxon laws he is also said to have been the founder of "trial by jury" and the Common English law. King Alfred's laws were very precise about which punishments were to be given out for each crime. The most usual punishment was a fine. In Saxon times every man had a money value according to his status. This was called a "wergild" or "man-price." A nobleman's wergild was worth about six times as much as an ordinary freeman. If a man was killed, deliberately or otherwise, his family were entitled to his wergild which was paid by either by the killer or the killer's family.
