In January 871, The Saxon and Dane armies met on Ashdown Plain. There they waited, jeering and shouting at one another. Alfred was keen to get to grips with the enemy, but his brother King Ethelred decided to spend the ensuing lull in prayer for victory and left the battlefield and would not return until the priest had finished!. So despite his brother’s orders to the contrary, Alfred rode forth and gave the cry for his own men to attack first and the battle to begin and following Never had Berkshire seen such carnage but eventually the Danes were defeated.
