When Alfred was twelve his mother, Queen Osburga, showed Alfred and his elder brothers a beautifully illuminated book of Saxon poetry. She promised it to the first of the Royal Princes who could learn to read it. Alfred won the book, and thenceforth his appetite for knowledge was unstoppable.
