Geocache Description:

A nice easy cache in the spirit of the side tracked series on the site of the old Canterbury South train station.

At the peak of the railway age Canterbury had 3 railway stations, Canterbury East, Canterbury West, and Canterbury South.

The Elham Valley line between Canterbury West and Cheriton (near Folkstone), opened in 1889, carrying a mixture of passengers and freight. The line took a scenic route through the Elham valley through a number of quaint villages.

Alas with the rise of the Bus and lorry, passenger and freight traffic reduced until it was uneconomical. The line suffered a drawn out decline, first going single tracked, before eventually closing to all passenger traffic when the line was taken over by the military during WWI to carry a giant rail mounted gun capable of bombarding the French coast.

WWII saw a slight reprise in the use of the line when military traffic once again took over, but it was short lived. The line finally closed on 16th June 1947.

Canterbury South station was demolished in the late '60's and replaced by bungalows next to the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

Little evidence now remains that there was ever a railway here, aside from a few markings on the occasional OS map.
