Ronnie James Dio, nome artístico de Ronald James Padavona nasceu em Portsmouth a 10 de julho de 1942 e foi um músico e compositor de heavy metal norte-americano, famoso como vocalista das bandas Rainbow e Black Sabbath.
Ronnie adoptou o sobrenome "Dio" em homenagem a um mafioso italiano, Johhny Dio. Ainda na escola, formou com colegas a banda de rockabilly Vegas Kings que, após mudar de nome várias vezes (chamou-se Ronnie and the Rumbles, Ronnie and the Redcaps, Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, The Eletric Elves e The Elves), finalmente tornou-se conhecida como ELF.
Em meados dos anos 70 foi chamado para cantar nos Rainbow de Ritchie Blackmore (ex-Deep Purple), onde gravou quatro álbuns. Após deixar os Rainbow, foi convidado para vocalista dos Black Sabbath, permanecendo com a banda até 1983.
No mesmo ano, lança um álbum solo, Holy Diver. Nele estão Vinny Appice, que também tinha saído dos Sabbath e acompanhou Dio, seu antigo companheiro dos Rainbow Jimmy Bain e o guitarrista Vivian Campbell (actual Def Leppard). Holy Diver foi muito bem aceite e deixou clássicos como, "Stand Up and Shout", "Don’t Talk to Strangers" e a mais famosa "Rainbow in the Dark".
Embalado com o sucesso, Dio lança mais um álbum em 1984 chamado The Last in Line. Este álbum levou a banda a uma enorme tournê mundial seguida do seu primeiro vídeo oficial.
Em 1985 lança Sacred Heart e em 1987 é lançado Dream Evil onde constava a canção "All the Fools Sail Away"
Dio só voltaria a aparecer em 1990 com Lock up the Wolves.
Em 1992 Dio volta aos Black Sabbath e grava mais um álbum chamado Dehumanizer. Neste mesmo ano sai uma coletânea intitulada Diamonds The Best Of com vários clássicos da banda Dio.
No ano seguinte, Dio lança Strange Highways e em 1996 sai Angry Machines.
Em 2000 lança Magica, um álbum conceptual que traz de volta o estilo clássico de Dio compondo letras sobre magia, dragões e bruxas.
Em 2002 sai Killing the Dragon que procurou repetir a mesma forma do anterior porém com um pouco mais de rapidez e peso.
Em 2003 sai seu primeiro DVD oficial, Evil Or Divine e, em 2004, o último trabalho de estúdio, Master Of The Moon.
Em 2007 reuniu-se com os antigos companheiros de Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler e Vinny Appice, para a promoção do álbum Black Sabbath - The Dio Years. Neste álbum estão grandes clássicos como "Neon Knights", "Die Young", "Falling Off The Edge Of The World", "The Mob Rules" e três músicas novas compostas especialmente para este disco: "The Devil Cried", "Ear in the Wall" e "Shadow of the Wind".
Dio também ajudou a criar uma das maiores tradições do Heavy metal. No documentário "Metal - a Headbangers Journey" é citado como o criador do Maloik, os "chifres" feitos com as mãos, imitado por fãs do género no mundo inteiro. Segundo ele, o símbolo era usado por sua avó italiana, e servia para afastar (ou provocar) o "mau olhado".
Para promoverem a colectânea os quatro se reuniram sob o nome Heaven and Hell para uma tournê mundial de um ano.
Em 2008, é lançado uma box com toda a discografia de Dio à frente dos Black Sabbath, chamado The Rules Of Hell, e os músicos anunciam que entrariam em estúdio para gravarem um novo álbum, baptizado de The Devil You Know, lançado em Abril de 2009.
Em 25 de Novembro de 2009, Wendy, sua esposa e empresária, anunciou lhe havia sido diagnosticado um cancro no estômago.
Apesar de no inicio do tratamento as perspectivas serem animadores e o cancro regredir o seu estado de saúde agravou-se e Dio morreu às 7:45 da manhã de 16 de Maio de 2010 em Houston,
