Hit for Six! Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

The Brat Pack: The cache has disappeared again less than a month after it was last replaced so it looks as if the cache location is compromised and I will be forced to archive it. Shame as it was 10 logs short of 500 visitors.

Geocache Description:

It is hard to believe that it is now over 40 years ago (on August 31, 1968) that Sir Garfield Sobers's stunned the cricket world whilst playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan at the St Helen's Ground by hitting six sixes in an over. It was the first time it had been achieved and further enhanced the credentials of a man dubbed the best all-rounder the game had seen.

The unfortunate bowler was Malcolm Nash, whose irritation at having to routinely remember a moment he wanted to instantly forget is tangible. But it is hard to overplay the significance of something that has only been matched three times since that Bank Holiday afternoon in Swansea.

Sobers struck five clean sixes, while another was carried over the boundary by Glamorgan fielder Roger Davies. A year earlier Sobers would have been out, but the law was changed for the 1968 season. Nash's humiliation was completed by the action of BBC producer John Norman, who was told by the Grandstand office to stop filming at tea. Norman kept the cameras rolling because BBC Wales wanted to practise filming cricket. "Fifteen minutes after it was all over, the producer, who had told us to stand down, rang back and begged me not to spill the beans," Norman said years later.

Sobers's tally of 36 runs in an over broke the 57-year-old record of 34 runs held by Ted Alletson.

The last ball was hit out of the ground coming to rest near here. The cache, a magnetic key safe container, has been placed near where that ball landed.
