Geocache Description:

A cache for a quick 'cache and dash' or a great day's exploring!

Park at the car park ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE ROAD AS THE CASTLE at N58"09.949' (NC 24279 23548) Elevation 72m. The old 'lay-by' style parking area a short distance away on the other side of the road is on a dangerous bend and we strongly advise against its use. The cache is a 100m easy walk from the car park.

On the shore of Loch Assynt just off the A837 Lochinver road are the restored remains of Ardvreck Castle, a 13th Century seat of power for Clan MacLeod. Indeed, most of Sutherland was under the control of this clan at this time and a glance in the local phone book confirms that this name is still very strong throughout this beautiful land. Please do visit the wikipedia link (click 'Related Web Page' just below the Terrain rating) for further historical information or take a few moments to read the information plaques at the car park, it will only serve to enrich your visit!

The areas surrounding Ardvreck Castle definitely deserves exploring. There are some really nice safe shingle/sand beaches (this is a freshwater loch) two beautiful burns (streams) and more historic ruins of Calda House, an old grain mill and abandoned croft houses and very interesting geology too. Given some nice weather this is an absolutely idyllic location for a family picnic and day out. Please do remember to keep dogs under close control and of-course 'CACHE IN - TRASH OUT'!!!

Do NOT go under the bridge, slippy and dangerous for kids!

The cache is a clear plastic container and originally contained: a bouncy ball, wooden puzzle, ear-phones, toy digger, camera strap, spinning top, kazoo and a semi-precious gemstone. This is a justifiably popular spot, so take care to pretend that you are simply admiring the view across the loch as you uncover the cache! ;-)
