Där Uppsalaslätten och Mälardalens jordbruksmarker övergår i det skogsrika Bergslagen växte Sala fram på 1500-talet som en gruvby i anslutning till den välkända silvergruvan.
Silver har präglat Sala under historiens gång och under långa tider var stadens gruva Europas största silverproducent. Det mesta av silvret användes för att tillverka mynt men sala-silvret användes även till olika konstföremål.
Sala var ett rikt område under gruvans glansperioder - och visst gäller detta än idag. Både för staden och för landsbygden. Silverstaden är en pittoresk småstad, vackert infattad i en omgivning som präglas av jordbruk och forna tiders bergshantering.
Den huvudsakliga sysselsättningen har genom historien varit bergsbruk och jordbruk. År 1624 fick Sala stadsprivilegier av Gustav II Adolf. Staden har eldhärjats vid två tillfällen, 1736 och 1880.
År 1710 när pesten spreds i Stockholm flyttade dåvarande kungafamiljen till Väsby Kungsgård i Sala. Kungsgården har hyst fler kungafamiljer genom historien, framförallt under 1600- och 1700-talen, då silvergruvan var en viktig inkomstkälla för riket.
Nära hälften av Salas cirka 22 000 invånare lever på landsbygden och i tätorterna runt Sala stad. Bondgårdar med ekologisk inriktning, lanthandlare och små gårdsbutiker som gör Sala till en levande och spännande landsbygdskommun.
Sala är till ytan Västmanlands största kommun. Sala präglas av småföretagaranda och är nu precis som i forna tider en genuin handelsstad.

There Uppsalaplain and Mälardalens farmlands pass on in the forest rich Bergslagen grown Sala forward on 1500-talet as one mining cottage in connection with it well known silver mine.
Silver has trademark of Sala over the time and during long times each town's mine Europe's bigest silver manufacturer. Most of it of the silver was used in order to produce coins but sala-silvret was used also to different art objects.
Sala were a rich area during gruvans gloss periods - and certain concerns this than today. Both for the town and for the countryside. The silver town is one small town, beautiful plast in an environment that is characterized of agricultures and ancient times' mountain handling.
The main employment has through historie been mining and agricultures. Years 1624 got Sala town privileges of Gustav Ii Adolf. The town fire has been ravaged at two occasions, 1736 and 1880.
Years 1710 when the plague was disseminated in Stockholm moved then in force kungafamily to Väsby Kungsgård in Sala. Kungsgården have accommodated more kungafamiljer through historien, above all during 1600 - and 1700-talen, then silvergruvan was an important source of income for the country.
