Geocache Description:

Bowling Green Dept.

On October 7, 1901 the St. Andrew's Society, a Scottish fraternal organization, formed a lawn bowling club in San Francisco. John McLaren, then Superintendent of Golden Gate Park, laid out a "green."

From its beginning in San Francisco, the sport attracted a number of women who sometimes played along with the Club's gentlemen members and, in 1912, the Women's Golden Gate Lawn Bowling Club was organized.

Since one green was now inadequate, the Park laid down another green, which opened for play in 1913. In 1928 a third green was added.

The Club's name was changed to San Francisco Lawn Bowling Club in 1931. Years later the women's and mens clubs merged.

Free Lessons are given every Wednesday at noon and by appointment on most weekends - weather permitting.

An instructor and training bowls are provided free of charge for the lessons. Bowlers must wear flat-soled shows, no heels.

More information is available at the club website www.sflbc.org
