Geocache Description:

The short story of the predecessors of Pápa Meat 1913 Ltd.
The Agriculture Minister’s order no. 54.000 of year 1908 included the control of meat cuts destined for retail trade in the cities with municipality and integrated council in the interest of developing sanitation. Accordingly, cattle, horse, sheep and swine to be sold were allowed to be slaughtered and processed solely at public slaughterhouses. The 35-40 butchers and slaughterers of Pápa were obliged to carry out slaughters at slaughterhouses regulated institutionally. The order granted a five-year moratorium for fulfilment.

Public city slaughterhouse
The city slaughterhouse could begin its operation on 5 May l9l3. It was established with a room for swine and another one for bovine slaughtering, 20 chilling rooms, ice factory, a flat for the veterinarian, with a building cost of 126.000 Crowns and equipment cost of 34.000 Crowns. That time the two slaughtering rooms had a slaughtering capacity of 4000-5000 kg live animals on a daily basis.
In December 1930 a large meeting took place in Pápa in which the farmers of Northern-Transdanubia gathered, where the establishment of the Transdanubian Porker Export Public Company was decided on. The public company was founded on 22 February 1931 and had 150 farmers as founding members. The goal of the company was to sell the raised swine at the best price possible.

The appearance of Poels Family
It was 1933, the last year of the world economic crisis which put countries with agricultural surplus to the most severe troubles. The domestic market was dull, the existence of the company got into danger. Under these adverse circumstances company Poels et Co. from Antwerp presented oneself at the Hungarian Royal Foreign Trade Office seeking to open bacon production in Hungary. It was Pápa that was offered to company Poels while the Transdanubian Porker Export Public Company was entrusted to purchase and transport swine. The public company entered into a contract with Poels on 14 October 1933 and from the end of October it began to process and export 370 swine per week to England for the time being. The Poels? had a Polish master brought to Pápa, with the guidance of which fifty skilled workers were the first to begin bacon production. In 1934 production and export became continuous. Upon the end of the crisis the export of agricultural products increased significantly, which had a favourable effect on pork export. After long preparation the Poels? launched their meat can factory at the slaughterhouse in Budapest. It was here where almost only canned ham was produced, most of which was exported to England. On 15 February 1935 Poels and Co. Bacon and Meat Can Factory Ltd. was registered at the registry court. The head-quarters of the company was in Pápa with its sub-office in Budapest.
swine for bacon to England, while 1156 pork sides were supplied to Germany. After founding the butchery in Gyor, the company opened its butchery in Veszprém in 1936, where they primarily achieved success with their excellent-quality cold cuts.
Due to increasing swine prices the Poels? were producing at loss sometimes, but intended to keep the English market by all means. One part of their loss could be redeemed by subsidies. First of all, the company Poels aimed to compensate the drop of bacon production by the increased processing of meat products besides German export. Thus, the meat processing plant at the slaughterhouse was enlarged and a new room was built. The first-class meat products were processed here, such as frankfurters, Pariser cold cut and hams. In 1938 they began the domestic sale of the canned ham which had been sold for export until then. Preparation for World War II, its tragic happenings and the restoration of the damage stemmed development.

Nationalization, merger
In the course of nationalization the Meat Industrial Corporation of Pápa came to existence in 1949. During this period the most important task was the smooth supply of inhabitants with meat and to establish the smaller conditions of the prescriptions and equipment for export of the Pápa plant.
The corporation got under the direct control of the ministry in 1952. In 1953 the construction of the canned ham production plant began satisfying also export conditions. To enhance and boost domestic supply a new plant was built for the production of meat products. As of 1 July 1963 the Meat Industrial Corporation of Veszprém and that of Keszthely merged into the Meat Industrial Corporation of Pápa. After the merger the central plant of the company was restored and the plants of the factories in Veszprém and Keszthely were developed.

Successful privatisation, unsuccessful Carnex
Due to its slaughtering and comprehensive processing activity the company was declared a meat combine from 1 January 1977. The company formed into a Plc and in 1993 the privatisation took place. In January 1994 the new slicing plant was built. Hence, the production of several up-to-date good-looking sliced products on trays in vacuum and in gas packaging became possible. In 2001 a regional food industrial cluster was founded with the leadership of Pápa Meat Plc, the aim of which was to increase competitiveness, to strengthen the domestic and foreign market presence, to harmonize research and development and to develop training and employing activity.

New owners
As of 1 January 2009 Pápa Meat l9l3 Ltd. founded by DEDEKO Ltd., WEST-AGRO Ltd., the municipality of Pápa town and the Sewage- and Water Works of Pápa purchased the resources of Pápa Meat cPlc (in liquidation) with 1120 employees.
The basic aim of Pápa Meat l9l3 Ltd. is to comply with changing consumer demands, to gain the trust of consumers with its products produced with high-quality and trustful technology and to keep its buyers. The company operates both at the domestic and foreign markets keeping these goals in view.
