On August 11, 1829, under a heavy fog, rain and gusty winds, a fleet of about twenty ships appeared in the bay of Praia, with four thousand men and an artillery with a total of 340 pieces.
On land, hundreds of men distributed over an arc of a dozen small forts, defended the best way they could, that stretch of coastline with about five miles long.
The battle began with the ships artillery opening heavy fire on the forts. Despite the bombing, which lasted more than four hours, the forts survived. At the end of the day the invaders lifted anchor, assuming defeat.
It was then that the Village of Praia received the title of Praia da Vitória (Praia of Victory).
