Geocache Description:

A cache on heathland close to the site of a WW2 radar mast (long since demolished).

The car park for this part of Salthouse Heath is at N52 56.61, E01 04.97. Officially you shouldn't take your car any further onto the heath, but in practice no-one will mind. However, the road across the heath does have some deep potholes, so take care. There are lovely views of the coast close to the cache site. About 100 yards south of the cache site are 4 lumps of iron sticking out of the ground. This is all that is left of a 200 foot tall WW2 radar tower. A Lancaster bomber collided with it in 1944, killing all but one of the crew, and requiring the mast to be demolished. Bard Hill continued to be used by the RAF until late 1960. For more information, see www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/b/bard_hill The cache is in a small plastic box, with a log book, and the usual bits and pieces. You will need to plough through some bracken in the summer time. Please make sure you replace the lid carefully and put back in the plastic bag to avoid the cache getting soaked.
