Geocache Description:

Una chiesetta da scoprire a Lugano-Loreto.
A small church to discover in Lugano-Loreto.

ITALIANO (English below)

ENGLISH
Santa Maria Church of Loreto

The Church of Santa Maria of Loreto was built between 1520 and 1524, but opened to the catholic cult only after 1904. In 1905 it was assigned to the Franciscan Friars, who lived in the annex convent until 2007.
The church is part of the Loreto's churchyard and is twinned with the much larger sanctuary in Italy by the same name and the basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. Inside the church, a chapel built in 1728 is a copy of the Holly Home of Loreto. In the garden in front of the church you will find a small fountain with a bronze statue of Saint Francis of Assisi, work of Pietro Borsari. The fenced garden on the other side, was in the 19th century the cementry of the non-Catholics.
