Geocache Description:

All Saints Church Footscray

The Church.
This delightful old church was started in the early 7th century when Pope Gregory sent St. Augustine, with St. Justis and St. Paulinus to bring Christianity to South East England. St Paulinus initially went north but returned in 633 AD to become the 3rd Bishop of Rochester. It is thought that, as bishop, he sailed down the Medway, up the Thames and into the River Cray which was then a navigable waterway for small vessels.
At the time of his visit it is thought that he built a small wooden Saxon church on the site of the present Church of All Saints; the original size of Footscray Church exactly matches the dimensions of a Saxon Church. This makes the church one of the oldest in the area.
The present church dates from about 1330 and is of perpendicular style. The Lord of Footscray Manor at that time, Sir Simon de Vaughan together with his wife were buried about 1350 in an altar tomb where they remained until 1861 when the church was extensively modified.
The church spire, re-shingled in 2004, was built by Lord Waring to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII. The carved choir stalls and chancel screen also date from this time.
The majority of the stained glass windows are Victorian although the one in the west wall of the Lady Chapel is much older and the two on the south side of the Nave at the east are 14th century work.
